Windsurfing: Vetch's Beach, Durban Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 15 knots Surf / Sea State: calm Air Temperature: 31 Sea Temperature: 27 Weather: clear, sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Major slog session. Basically rigged too small. Had an option of the 5.4 or
7.0 and went for the 5.4 hoping it would build to that strength.
Launched and was powered just short of an easy plane. Wind was onshore so I
figured if I slogged a bit upwind I'd have room to play with and could pump
/ surf onto the plane. Soon realised it wasn't going to happen. Wind
remained marginal for hours.
I could have gone in and rigged the 7.0 but I discovered that the starboard
side boom arm to nose piece connection was loose and would probably break
so I thought I'd just slog around and see what happened. As it turned out
it lasted the session but it wasn't particularly taxed.
Frustrating but I guess it's all good for fitness and balance. Slogging is
tiring ;-) Got to practise my non-planing gybes and executed one lovely
balance gybe. I wouldn't call it a tail sinker because I managed to
maneuver round without sinking the tail at all.
Other post-mortems - NP freeride boom has been a let-down quality wise. It
feels good, is light and maneuverable to sail but I bent it easily when I
had just got it in a major wipe out. Since then it is a dog to adjust and
the little pin-things that lock the length adjustment are very weak and
prone to failure. Now, not that many sessions down the line, the nose-piece
fails. Booo. Will try to avoid NP booms in future.
On the up-side - it was a superb day in durban. Sun, breeze, beautiful
clear blue water. Next time will take a chance on the big side rather.
See you on the water.
